Top 10 Japanese Stocks For 2014

(Note: to read the entire Zacks Market Strategy for July, click here: What We Should Expect from Q2 Earnings)

The Big Picture

The jobs picture continued to brighten to the end of June. In the first half of 2013, in response, U.S. stock markets rallied to levels not seen in six years. Global markets stagnated. The S&P 500 index traded above the 1670 level in early June. Then, it settled down.

Strong evidence showed capital leaving bonds funds after Fed taper talk picked up. A rising 10-year U.S. risk-free rate is the major issue now.

Fed and Japanese BoJ bond buying is at work, month-to-month. With more job additions, most U.S. stimulus timelines move into this year.

Is it time to buy in early July?

Wee onboard for a further rise in U.S. stocks under global QE. If a Fed taper hits this fall, look for a sell-off. This fall downside risk puts a range-bound market into play for the summer. Markets don like uncertainty.

Hot Chemical Companies To Own In Right Now: Sirona Dental Systems Inc (SIRO)

Sirona Dental Systems, Inc. (Sirona), incorporated on April 25, 1997, and its subsidiaries is a manufacturer of dental equipment, and is focused on developing, manufacturing and marketing solutions for dentists around the world. The Company operates in four segments: Dental CAD/CAM Systems, Imaging Systems, Treatment Centers and Instruments. The Company markets its products globally to dental practices, clinics and laboratories through an international network of distributors. The dental distributors supply both dental equipment and consumables, and have regular contact with the ultimate end-users. In addition, the Company also distributes its products through its own sales and services infrastructure.

Dental CAD / CAM Systems

Dental CAD/CAM Systems address the dental restorations, which includes several types of restorations, such as inlays, onlays, veneers, crowns, bridges, copings and bridge frameworks made from ceramic, metal or composite blocks. Sirona's CEramic REConstruction (CEREC) system is an in-office application that enables dentists to produce high quality restorations from ceramic material and insert them into the patient's mouth during a single appointment. The CEREC system consists of an imaging unit and a milling unit. The imaging unit scans the damaged area, captures the image of the tooth or teeth requiring restoration and proposes the specifications for the restoration. The milling unit then mills the ceramic restoration to the required specifications based upon the captured image and the dentist's design specifications.

Sirona offers a service contract on its CEREC product, which includes software updates and upgrades and maintenance on software-related hardware. In addition to CEREC, Sirona also offers CAD/CAM products for dental laboratories, including the inLab restoration fabrication system and the extra-oral inEos scanner. These products are designed to improve efficiency and reduce costs for the dental lab. The inLab system scans the ! models received from the dentists and then mills ceramic or composite block restorations, such as crown copings and bridge frameworks to the specifications of the captured image.

Imaging Systems

Imaging Systems comprise a broad range of systems for diagnostic imaging in the dental practice. Sirona has developed a comprehensive range of imaging systems for two dimensional (2D) or three dimensional (3D), panoramic and intra-oral applications. Intra-oral x-ray systems use image-capture sensor devices, which are inserted into the mouth behind the diagnostic area, and take images of one or two teeth. Panoramic x-ray systems produce images of the entire jaw structure by means of an x-ray tube and an image capture device, which rotates around the head.

Treatment Centers

Treatment Centers consists of a range of products from basic dentist chairs to chair-based units with integrated diagnostic, hygiene and ergonomic functionalities, as well as specialist centers used in preventative treatment and for training purposes. Sirona offers specifically configured products to meet the preferences of dentists within each region in which it operates. Sirona's treatment center configurations and system integration are designed to enhance productivity by creating a seamless workflow within the dental practice.

Instruments

Sirona offers a range of instruments, including handheld and power-operated handpieces for cavity preparation, endodontics, periodontology and prophylaxis, which are regularly updated and improved. The instruments are supplemented by multi-function tips, supply and suction hoses, as well as care and hygiene systems for instrument preparation. Sirona's instruments are often sold as packages in combination with treatment centers.

An up-and-down yen spurs an up-and-down market
Abe brought about stimulus in response to one of Japan's worst economic problems of the last half-century: more than two decades of a stagnant economy and deflation. Weakening the yen against other leading currencies would be a boon for leading Japanese exporters looking for an edge against overseas competition. Manufacturers such as Komatsu (NASDAQOTH: KMTUY  ) have applauded the moves as they look to use a weak yen to grow profits. Komatsu alone projected 46% full-year profit growth this year thanks to the weak yen.

    Risks
An investment in Hi-Crush is not without risks. It's not as diversified as rivalU.S. Silica Holdings (NYSE: SLCA  ) ,which has pursued a strategy that has it boasting over 200 products and 1,400 customers. Hi-Crush has just a handful of customers and one main product. Meanwhile, U.S. Silica is much more geographically diverse with 15 facilities compared to just two for Hi-Crush. I like the fact Hi-Crush is a pure play; however, being concentrated is a big risk, which is one reason why I'm writing puts to buy units much cheaper.

Top Airline Companies To Own For 2014

To cut costs and keep their options open, more airlines are choosing to lease planes, rather than buy them. This strategy helps airlines avoid the expenses of actually owning jets, and gives them more freedom to change the size and makeup of their fleets as needed. In the booming aircraft leasing industry, Air Lease(NYSE: AL)looks like your best investment option, for five compelling reasons.

1. A young fleet
One of the characteristics of the aircraft leasing industry is the regular churning of aircraft. As new aircraft with higher fuel efficiency and capacity are introduced in the market, aircraft companies prefer to replace the old fleet with the new ones. A relatively younger fleet would allow the company to charge more for leasing those planes.

Air Lease's fleet has a weighted average age of 3.5 years, compared to 10.7 years for Aircastle (NYSE: AYR  ) and 5.1 years for AerCap Holdings (NYSE: AER  ) . As a result of this advantage, Air Lease is currently trading at a price-to-book value (P/BV) of 1.17, compared to 0.8 and 0.95 for Aircastle and AerCap Holdings, respectively.

Many of these airports are slot-controlled, meaning the government has capped the number of flights that airlines are permitted to schedule, To mitigate delays. These slots are highly sought after. For example, JetBlue Airways (NASDAQ: JBLU  ) bid $40 million for eight slot-pairs (the rights to operate eight round trips) at Reagan National Airport in late 2011. On peak days, airlines will use every single slot that they own at these popular airports.

Getty Images WASHINGTON -- As one part of the U.S. government looks to remove restrictions on making phone calls from airplanes, another agency is apparently considering its own prohibition. Federal Communications Commission Chairman Thomas Wheeler told members of Congress that while his agency sees no technical reason to ban calls on planes, Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx told him Thursday morning that the DOT will be moving forward with its own restrictions. Wheeler called his proposal to rescind the ban "the responsible thing to do." Calls have been prohibited for 22 years over fears that they would interfere with cellular networks on the ground. Technological advances had resolved those concerns. "When the rationale for a rule doesn't exist, the rule shouldn't exist," Wheeler told members of the House Communications and Technology Subcommittee during his 39th day in office. Wheeler said he has called the chief executives of major airlines, telling them that the government isn't requiring them to allow calls. Ultimately, the decision will rest with individual airlines. "I understand the consternation caused by the thought of your onboard seatmate disturbing the flight making phone calls. I do not want the person in the seat next to me yapping at 35,000 feet any more than anyone else," Wheeler said. "But we are not the Federal Courtesy Commission." The DOT, which includes the Federal Aviation Administration, wasn't immediately available for comment. The FCC proposal comes just weeks after the Federal Aviation Administration lifted its ban on using personal electronic devices such as iPads and Kindles below 10,000 feet, saying they don't interfere with cockpit instruments. An Associated Press-GfK poll released Wednesday found that 48 percent of Americans oppose allowing cellphones to be used for voice calls while flying; just 19 percent support it. Another 30 percent are neutral. Among those who fly, opposition is stronger. Loo

I ran a subjective screen of the companies in IYT, using the following criteria:

First, I eliminated the airline stocks. I would never own an airline stock individually: they have a long tradition of providing poor returns for their shareholders. A glimpse at a few ten year charts for component airlines like Delta (DAL), Jetblue (JBLU), Southwest (LUV) and United Continental Holdings (UAL) shows a lot of volatility and pitiful gains. The exact opposite of what investors should be looking for. Furthermore they are oil price sensitive: a more efficient way to trade this is an oil ETF. And yes, they are becoming more efficient with newer engines, but Boeing (BA) is a more efficient way to trade that issue. Second, I looked for companies that have shown (nearly) uninterrupted earnings growth since the recession ended in 2009. Sure maybe a soft quarter here and there; but solid growth. If the issue was a bit in doubt I turned to the company's ten year record, and insisted if growth was negative during the recession, it recover swiftly afterward and share net go on to new highs. finally, I wanted the company's trailing PE ratio to be near the bottom of its ten year range.

Yes, these screen criteria are more subjective than a pure computer screen would be, but this leaves room for investor analysis and judgment, which never should be off the table when making an investment.

Advisors' Opinion:

The airline will undoubtedly pounce on the likely failings of rival companies, though this is also an area where easyJet will be eager to move in. Spanair is gone as is Malev Zrt, two former Ryanair rivals. Air France-KLM (AFLYY.PK) and Iberia are in trouble, among other European airlines. Ryanair will take advantage of such weaknesses in its aim of becoming Europe's out-and-out dominant short-haul carrier. As other airlines cut routes, airports are now looking to Ryanair to take up the newly available airport space. As a result of this, with "opportunities opening up in Germany, Scandinavia and Central Europe" in particular, Ryanair's deputy chief executive, Howard Millar sees the Irish company increase its market share from 15 percent to 20 percent before the end of the decade.

5 Best Low Price Stocks To Invest In Right Now

There's a multi-year high in demand from the jewelry sector and record demand for gold bars and coins, but slowing demand from central banks balanced it all out, writes MoneyShow's Jim Jubak, also of Jubak's Picks.

Gold spiked higher yesterday on news of more violence in the Middle East and an afternoon tumble in the dollar. Gold for December delivery is up 2.34% to $1364 an ounce. Gold stocks are up even more. Jubak's Picks portfolio members Goldcorp (GG) and Yamana Gold (AUY), for example, were up 5.94% and 5.55%, respectively, as of 2:45 PM New York time.

But the medium-term trends make me cautious here. The second quarter numbers from the World Gold Council, out yesterday, show a multi-year high in demand from the jewelry sector and record demand for gold bars and coins. But big outflows from gold ETFs and slowing demand from central banks more than balanced that out. Gold demand fell 12% in the quarter of a four-year low.

Of course, that's backwards looking. The one piece of data that makes me especially cautious looking forward is that a 6% year-over-year drop in gold supply in the quarter, which helped support gold prices, was almost totally due to a reduction in recycling, as individuals held onto gold jewelry rather than selling it because of low prices. Mine output increased by 4% in the quarter and supply from recycling fell 21% to 308.3 tons, the lowest since the third quarter of 2009. If gold supply from recycling picks up (or doesn't fall as much), that will remove some support for the price of gold, and if it picks up enough, it could lead to another round of production cuts from gold miners.

If you're a trader, you try to catch these ups and downs. If you're a longer term trader, you sort of go with Japanese equities. The one that I've got in Jubak's Picks is Toyota Motor, (TM), which trades in New York as an ADR. You can also go with something like Torre Industries (TRYIF), which trades as an ADR in New York as well as on the Tokyo exchange. They're the world's largest maker of carbon fiber, good play on exports to the aircraft and car industries. Or you can do something like Seven & I (SVNDY), the Japanese company that owns 7-Elevens around the world. So, those would be my ways to play a weak yen if you want to use Japanese equities for the week and the year ahead.

If the idea of Carl Icahn wanting to split a company up seems vaguely familiar, too … well, that’s hardly anything new, either. Icahn was the key driver behind Transocean (RIG) opting to divest some of its master limited partnership holdings, he desperately wanted OshKosh (OSK) to spin off JLG, and somehow Icahn got credit for sparking Motorola’s (MSI) spinoff of its mobile phone business.

For those traders who were lucky and smart enough to be in an Arotech Corporation (NASDAQ:ARTX) before today, then congratulations - you're up at least 38% on your position. Now it's time to get out. Conversely, if you're looking for a new name to get into (or perhaps looking for a place to park your ARTX proceeds), then you may want to consider Pazoo Inc. (OTCBB:PZOO)... a tiny online retailer of health and fitness goods. PZOO has dropped several tell-tale hints that more upside is on the way.

Molson's Coors Light commands a 14% market share in Canada, and it says it's the country's top-selling beer. Its Molson Canadian is the third biggest seller, with an 8% share. Yet Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD  ) claims that its Labatt Breweries, which it acquired in 1995, is the top brewery in the country. And Euromonitor International says that between Labatt and Molson, they controlled 79% of the beer market up north in 2011.

C&C says the cider market is growing 9% to 10% globally, and we're seeing a number of other brewers also recognize the potential. Anheuser-Busch InBev (NYSE: BUD  ) introducedStella Artois Cidre andMichelob Ultra Light Cider, Heineken distributes the U.K.-basedStrongbow brand, and the joint venture of SABMiller and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) , Miller Coors, acquired Crispin cider.

  • [By Dan Caplinger]

There's no disputing the huge impact that Boston Beer has had on the brewing industry. Giant brewers Anheuser-Busch (NYSE: BUD  ) and Molson Coors (NYSE: TAP  ) have stepped up with craft-like entrants of their own in an effort to capture the fast-growing craft-beer segment, yet many consumers of craft beers have fierce loyalty to smaller brands and are inclined to resist marketing pushes from bigger companies. Yet Boston Beer faces the challenge of having become the giant in its niche, risking the possibility of having its image change from up-and-coming underdog to domineering establishment-brewer over private microbrewing competitors.

One: Cost savings could be much higher than expected. According to Credit Suisse's analysts, Coca Cola might largely surpass its cost saving target by as much as 300%. This means that the world's soft drinks leader would be able extract up to $1.5 billion in efficiency gains from its value chain- or 7% of total costs. According to Coca Cola, the value chain optimization program goes around four basic areas: (1) Global supply chain optimization (2) Leverage on global marketing. (3) Operating expense leverage. (4) Data and IT standardization. That said, I think most of the efficiency gains will be a result of the optimization of the company's supply chain. The new plan is supposed to resemble what AB InBev (BUD) has been doing for a while in the beer industry: Very few, large and efficient breweries produce and package all the volume which is distributed via independent wholesalers and distributors.

Top 10 Dividend Companies To Watch For 2014

With Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL  ) and Cirrus Logic (NASDAQ: CRUS  ) holding hands today as they dive into new 52-week lows, how cheap have shares gotten? Answer: Very.

In sickness and in health
Both companies have ridden high together over the past five years, and likewise the couple has fallen without leaving each other's side. At least they've still got each other, even if they've both given up substantial gains over the past six months.

AAPL data by YCharts.

Starting with the Mac maker, shares now trade at just 9.2 times earnings. That's almost half of the 17.9 times earnings that the broader market currently trades at. If you back out the $146 per share in cash that Apple was sitting on at the end of December, that figure falls to 5.8.

Taking it a bit further, Apple has no doubt added even more dollars to its money mountain over the past three months. Even after paying out its dividend and buying back some shares, it's entirely feasible for its cash position to grow by another $10 billion this quarter (which investors won't find out about until next Tuesday).

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Alex Planes]

Natural gas company ONEOK (NYSE: OKE  ) led the hit parade with a big 25.5% pop after announcing its plans to spin off its natural gas utility distribution business at some point early next year. The new company, to be called One Gas, will have a two-million-customer network throughout Oklahoma, Kansas, and Texas. By spinning off this business, ONEOK hopes to appeal to yield seekers, as it can now boost its dividend once it becomes a pure-play pipeline partnership company. The utility spinoff also has the added bonuses of debt reduction and greater free cash flow for ONEOK, which will generate an estimated $1.1 billion to $1.2 billion from the spinoff. Freed of the cash-hungry utility segment, ONEOK could become a highly competitive high-yield stock for energy investors.
