Hot Services Companies For 2014

"Yay! I got charged a fee."

--Nobody, ever

Most of the time, consumers realize most fees charged by businesses or people are unavoidable, and they cough up the dough being demanded without too much of a fuss. However, when it comes to fees charged on their bank accounts, consumers become red in the face and declare that great injustice has been imposed against them.

What is it about bank fees that make consumers so angry, while other fees don't conjure up the slightest peep? Every day, people shell out their hard-earned dollars to drive on toll roads. When stepping onto a city bus or metro train, passengers pay the fare without thinking twice. And these are public services that are funded by taxpayer money! On the other hand, Bank of America (NYSE: BAC  ) and Wells Fargo (NYSE: WFC  ) are private enterprises that provide financial solutions to their customers and reserve the right to charges fees, as long as they are clearly communicated.

Shutterstock/Andrey Burmakin Folks are turning to the Internet more and more in planning business trips and personal getaways -- and investors are cashing in on the trend. Shares of Orbitz Worldwide (OWW) soared 18 percent last week after posting better than expected quarterly results. Revenue climbing 4 percent and profitability clocking in at 5 cents a share may not seem very impressive, but analysts were settling for the volatile travel portal to merely break even on flattish revenue growth. Strength in its hotel bookings were more than enough to offset weakness in airline reservations. Orbitz Worldwide's larger and faster-growing peers priceline.com (PCLN) and Expedia (EXPE) went along for the ride, climbing 7 percent and 4 percent respectively. They both went on to hit new all-time highs. Seeing an industry laggard start to grow profitably again -- and Orbitz Worldwide is calling for modest continued growth into 2014 -- was enough to get the market behind the popular providers of lodging, air travel, car rental, cruise and vacation package reservations. This isn't just a one-week phenomenon. Priceline and Expedia shares have soared 174 percent and 171 percent since the end of 2011. Orbitz Worldwide has also more than doubled in that time, and it's up a whopping 223 percent since the start of 2013. The Ins and Outs of Inn Outings Orbitz Worldwide's report would have been better if it wasn't held back by an 11 percent decline in airline ticket sales. Priceline and Expedia are growing their airfare sales, but modestly, compared to their hotel reservations. This isn't a surprise. Airlines have done a good job of marketing directly to passengers. There are a lot of people on frequent flyer programs, so they often head directly to an air carrier's website when it's time to book a trip. Pricing is also pretty competitive between airlines. There may not be a lot of carriers offering the desired route, but they are quick to respond to what rivals are doing. Th

An increasing presence in the Asia Pacific region will boost Expedia growth as well and the acquisition is a positive step in that direction. Priceline (PCLN) has also adopted a similar growth strategy for expanding in the Asia Pacific and it is working for the company.

Echo Therapeutics, Inc. (Echo), incorporated on September 10, 2007, is a transdermal medical device company. The Company is developing Prelude SkinPrep System (Prelude) as a technology to allow for painless and skin permeation that enable both analyte extraction and needle-free drug delivery. The Company is developing its Symphony CGM System (Symphony) as a non-invasive, wireless continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) system for use in hospital critical care units and for people with diabetes. The Prelude SkinPrep System (Prelude), a component of its Symphony CGM System, allows for skin permeation that enables extraction of analytes such as glucose. Prelude platform skin preparation technology also allows for needle-free, transdermal drug delivery.

Symphony CGM System

The Symphony CGM System incorporates a Prelude skin preparation device, transdermal sensor, wireless transmitter and data display monitor. When the electro-chemical glucose sensor is placed on the prepared site, it uses glucose oxidase to generate a continuous current that is proportional to the concentration of blood glucose in the vessels beneath the epidermis. The signals are then wirelessly transmitted to a remote monitor. The monitor, calibrated periodically with a reference blood glucose measurement, converts the data to a glucose measurement based on the reference value. The monitor displays glucose readings and also contains customizable early-warning alarms for hypo- or hyperglycemia.

Prelude SkinPrep System

The Company is developing Prelude as a transdermal skin preparation device for Symphony to improve the access to the interstitial fluids and the flow of molecules across the protective membrane of the stratum corneum, the outmost protective layer of the skin. Prelude incorporates the Company's skin abrasion control technology into a hand-held device used to prepare a small area of the skin. The non-invasive sensor is applied to this prepared area in order to measure the in! terstitial glucose levels.

Truth be told, Echo Therapeutics Inc. (NASDAQ:ECTE) doesn't look like a particularly impressive stock right now. At $2.92 per share, ECTE is just trading right around where it was a few days ago, not to mention a few weeks ago. And, without any real "news" from the company in months, it's tough to think the market's going to be getting excited about the stock anytime soon. When you take a closer look at Echo Therapeutics though, a few subtle-but-compelling clues start to appear.

Top 10 Japanese Companies For 2014

The party line from Wall Street and the Fed is that the process of tapering will be relatively painless. My take? Fuhgeddaboudit. It will be anything but smooth, says Mike Larson of Money and Markets.

Quantitative easing is unlike anything the Fed has previously done in the last century. It was an untested, fly-by-the-seat-of-the-pants policy when policymakers rolled it out in the midst of 2008's full-scale credit market emergency.

No one at the Fed—or anywhere else—had any idea what the long-term consequences would be. But they did it anyway because they had nothing else up their sleeve.

That made it inherently risky from the start. Things went okay for a while, which encouraged the Fed to keep at it...despite the fact the real economy didn't respond all that much.

But beginning this spring, everything started to change. In fact, the last few QE and QE-like moves that overseas central banks have tried have utterly backfired.

Take Japan. An initial pop in Japanese stocks due to that country's massive QE effort has now resulted in some of the worst declines—and crazy volatility—in several years. In just two recent weeks, for instance, Nikkei 225 futures plunged more than 3,300 points. That was a whopping 21% move!

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Transcept Pharmaceuticals (TSPT) is a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the development and commercialization of proprietary products that address important therapeutic needs in neuroscience. This stock closed up 6% to $2.98 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $2.81-$2.99

    52-Week Range: $2.77-$6.77

    Thursday's Volume: 138,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 158,095

From a technical perspective, TSPT spiked sharply higher here right above some near-term support at $2.77 and back above its 50-day moving average at $2.95 with decent upside volume. This move is quickly pushing shares of TSPT within range of triggering a major breakout trade. That trade will hit if TSPT manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.16 to $3.25 with high volume. If that breakout hits, it would also push TSPT outside of a large consolidation pattern the stock has been in for the last three months.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in TSPT as long as it's trending above some key near-term support at $2.77 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 158,095 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then TSPT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.23 to its 200-day moving average at $4.50. Any high-volume move above those levels will then put $4.89 to $5 into range for shares of TSPT.

  • [By Roberto Pedone]

An under-$10 biotech stock that's trending very close to triggering a near-term breakout trade is Transcept Pharmaceuticals (TSPT), which is focused on the development and commercialization of proprietary products that address important therapeutic needs in neuroscience. This stock has been hit hard by the bears so far in 2013, with shares off by 36%.

If you take a look at the chart for TSPT, you'll notice that this stock has been trending sideways inside of a big consolidation pattern for the last three months, with shares moving between $2.71 on the downside and $3.25 on the upside. Shares of TSPT are counter-trending higher today in the face of a very weak tape. This move is starting to push the stock within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above the upper-end of its sideways trading chart pattern.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in TSPT if it manages to break out above its 50-day moving average at $2.91 a share and then once it takes out more near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.16 to $3.25 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 138,444 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then TSPT will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $4.23 to its 200-day at $4.39 a share. If those levels get taken out with volume, then TSPT could easily hit its next major overhead resistance levels at $5 to $5.50 a share.

Traders can look to buy TSPT off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below its recent low of $2.71 a share. One can also buy TSPT off strength once it clears those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

Despite the broad market gains, not every stock was a winner today. Shares of Lumber Liquidators (NYSE: LL  ) were getting taken to the woodshed, falling 12% after Whitney Tilson, head of the Kase Capital Management hedge fund, announced a short position in the high-flying wood-flooring specialist. At an investor conference, Tilson noted a government investigation into potentially illegal timber imports by Lumber Liquidators, and suggested the company's gross margins, which have improved to better than 40% lately, were too good to be true. The hedge fund manager also cited a report from the non-profit Environmental Investigative Agency that said Lumber Liquidators' purchases "have fueled rampant illegal logging in Eastern Russia." Fossil fuel companies and the EPA have hardly formed a mutual admiration society during the past four years. The Wall Street Journal maintained as much 18 months ago in an editorial precipitated by an interminable -- and still ongoing -- look into the possibility that fracking by Encana (NYSE: ECA  ) has fouled the water tableat minuscule (population 175) Pavillion, Wyo. As the paper observed: "The agency is dominated by anticarbon true believers, and the Obama Administration has waged a campaign to raise the price(s) and limit the production of fossil fuels."

ConocoPhillips (COP) explores for, produces, transports, and markets crude oil, bitumen, natural gas, liquefied natural gas, and natural gas liquids on a worldwide basis. I am attracted to the above average yield on ConocoPhillips, in comparison to Exxon and Chevron. Unfortunately Chevron is already one of my highest weighted positions, which is why ConocoPhillips was the second US oil choice. I am building my position in the stock with this purchase. The company is extremely well run, has a history of disposing out of non-core assets such as Lukoil stock (LUKOY) and Kashagan Project, and sending cash to shareholders in the process. The company has increased dividends for 13 years in a row, and has managed to boost them by 15.10%/year over the past decade. Currently, the stock trades at 10.70 times earnings and yields 4.20%.
