Best Supermarket Stocks To Buy For 2014

There are those glorious days in life, when you walk into the supermarket to buy cereal, and at the checkout, the guy ringing you up says, "You know these are buy one, get two free?" Really? How is that possible? you think. Well, I guess I'd be a fool not to take advantage. Then you wander home, smiling at your good fortune.

Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT  ) feels like that right now.

After a disappointing earnings release, including an acknowledgment of weakness in Surface sales, the company's stock tanked, falling 12% over the next day. The company is now trading at a P/E of just 12, even though revenue, operating income, and earnings per share all increased over the previous year. If now isn't the time to buy Microsoft, I'm not sure there will ever be a time.

The state business
No one needs to kid himself into thinking that things are as they've always been. PC sales are dropping like greased watermelons, and the companies that support PCs are generally doing poorly. Intel (NASDAQ: INTC  ) is forecasting 2013 sales to be level with the previous year, and second-quarter income fell almost 30%, the company announced last week. The chipmaker isn't the only one suffering, as computer manufacturers and software companies have floundered as well.

Monster Beverage Corp (NASDAQ: MNST), a mid cap marketer and distributor of energy drinks and alternative beverages, has been a monster of a performer since the end of the financial crisis as the stock is up around 308% over the past five years, but could new or overlooked players like small cap beverage stocksJones Soda Co (OTCMKTS: JSDA), Celsius Holdings, Inc (OTCMKTS: CELH) and Konared Corp (OTCBB: KRED) repeat that performance? A look strictly at the long term performance of all three small caps might have you thinking otherwise. After all, none of these small cap beverage stocks are profitable whilethe beverage industry can be a long hard expensive slog just to increase market share by one or two points when you are competing for shelf space with industry giants like Pepsi and Coke. But past performance is just thatthe past and only part of the story as there is much more to consider about these small cap beverage stocks which could also make them potential acquisition targets by larger beverage players seeking to expand their product line up with innovative products:

Yesterday, small cap geothermal stock U.S. Geothermal Inc (NYSEMKT: HTM) produced a geyser of a return when it surged 26.79%, meaning its worth taking a closer look at the stock verses the performance of other geothermal stocks like small cap Ormat Technologies, Inc (NYSE: ORA) and mid cap Calpine Corporation (NYSE: CPN).First of all, I should mention there are some other geothermal stocks out there like Alterra Power Corp (CVE: AXY) and Ram Power Corp (TSE: RPG) who have their primary listing on Canadian exchanges with secondary ones on the OTCmeaning they may not be a good deal for American investors or easy to invest in. Second, U.S. Geothermal Inc itself is a good geothermal proxy as itsfocused on developing, owning, and operating clean, sustainable electric power from geothermal energy resources and itsoperating geothermal power projects at Neal Hot Springs, Oregon; San Emidio, Nevada; and Raft River, Idaho plus El Ceibillo, an advanced stage, geothermal prospect located within a 24,710 acre energy rights concession area near Guatemala City, the largest city in Central America.

The first risk NextEra faces is its extraordinarily high levels of debt. It's true that cash flow from electricity generation is steady, but so is the interest it pays on the $28.2 billion in debt the company carries on its balance sheet. Electric utilities don't have much choice when it comes to upgrading or expanding their operations in order to reduce their long-term operating costs other than to take on debt to fund projects. The danger is that sometimes this debt can even put previous darlings out of business. U.S. electric utility Calpine (NYSE: CPN  ) , for example, was forced to declare bankruptcy in 2005, weighed down by $17 billion in debt at the time. Calpine's collapse had a lot to do with the weakness in the energy market generated by Enron's collapse a few years prior, but it has also failed to regain its luster since reemerging from bankruptcy.

Investors really like Advance Auto Parts (AAP) deal to buy a chain of repair shops–so much so that a stock that finished yesterday in the low 80s is now trading in the mid-90s.

    Agence France-Presse/Getty Images

Reuters has the details on the deal:

Advance Auto Parts Inc will buy 1,418 outlets of the Carquest chain to boost its auto repair operations to complement its car parts business, sending its shares up as much as 20 percent to a record high.

Advance Auto, which sells products such as batteries, air fresheners and engine parts, said it would buy General Parts International Inc for just over $2 billion, creating the largest North American retailer of auto parts.

General Parts is the biggest operator of the Carquest chain, which runs auto repair shops and car parts stores. General Parts also owns Worldpac, the No.1 supplier of replacement parts for imported car and truck brands.

Reuters notes that the finished product will be the largest supplier of auto parts by sales, just beating out Autozone (AZN).

Credit Suisse analyst Simeon Gutman and team call the deal a “smart strategic acquisition.” They write:

The acquisition would solve two important issues for AAP. First, it has struggled in the DIFM segment, primarily due to a weaker and less accessible distribution network. General Parts has one of the most established distribution networks in the country (~40 DCs vs. AAP’s 10) and long standing relationships with mechanics nationwide. More importantly, WORLDPAC (estimated $1 billion in sales) is the leader in foreign parts with AAP owning the number three player and we see synergies from AI flooding into WORLDPAC.

A meaningfully positive aspect of the transaction is targeted annual cost savings of roughly $160 million within three years (~6.1% of acquired sales). This seems relatively consistent with previous DIY Auto deals. The deal is expected to be 20%+ accretive to FY 14 ca

    Calling all cash flows
When you are trying to buy the market's best stocks, it's worth checking up on your companies' free cash flow once a quarter or so, to see whether it bears any relationship to the net income in the headlines. That's what we do with this series. Today, we're checking in on Wausau Paper (NYSE: WPP  ) , whose recent revenue and earnings are plotted below.

Dentsu paid 3.16 billion pounds ($4.8 billion) for Aegis as Japan biggest agency competes with global firms including WPP Plc (WPP) and Omnicom Group Inc. (OMC) With Japan benchmark Topix index on pace for its best result since 2005, the 112-year-old company is tapping an equities boom to fund the deal that added the largest independent buyer of advertising space and reduced its reliance on the domestic market.

  • [By Holly LaFon]

In the second half of the year, Crescent established new positions in a few companies that have more such global footprints. We initiated investments in Google (GOOG), as well as the advertising agencies Interpublic (IPG) and WPP (WPP). The fortunes of all three are tied directly to the level of global advertising spend, and they all saw their shares prices decline due to concerns of a recession-related slowdown. At our purchase price, we believe we were buying each at roughly 11-13x our estimated earnings for 2012 should the fears of a macroeconomic slowdown prove correct. This strikes us as a very reasonable multiple to pay for asset-light global businesses that generate strong free cash flow across the business cycle and have the capability to grow earnings greater than GDP in a normal economic environment.

Advisors' Opinion:

Yanzhou Coal Mining (YZC) engages in the underground coal mining, as well as preparation, processing, sale and railway transportation of coal. This stock closed up 7.6% to $7.31 in Thursday's trading session.

    Thursday's Range: $7.14-$7.31

    52-Week Range: $6.68-$18.57

    Thursday's Volume: 391,000

    Three-Month Average Volume: 370,383

From a technical perspective, YZC bounced sharply higher here right off some near-term support at $6.77 with above-average volume. This stock has been downtrending badly for the last six months, with shares plunging from its high of over $14 to its recent low of $6.68. During that move, shares of YZC have been consistently making lower highs and lower lows, which is bearish technical price action. That said, shares of YZC have recently formed a double bottom chart pattern at $6.68 to $6.77. This stock now looks ready to reverse that downtrend and possibly trigger a near-term breakout trade. That trade will hit if YZC manages to take out some near-term overhead resistance levels at $7.76 to $8 with high volume.

Traders should now look for long-biased trades in YZC as long as it's trending above its recent low of $6.77 and then once it sustains a move or close above those breakout levels with volume that hits near or above 370,383 shares. If that breakout triggers soon, then YZC will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance levels at $9 to $10. Any high-volume move above those levels will then give YZC a chance to tag its next major overhead resistance levels at $10.67 to $11.11.

Hot European Companies To Own For 2014

Elvis Barukcic, AFP/Getty ImagesTourists take a guided tour of medieval defense walls surrounding the historical city of Dubrovnik, Croatia. ZAGREB, Croatia -- The wildly popular "Game of Thrones" TV series has spurred tourists' interest in visiting Croatia, where much of the epic TV fantasy is set. But it could also help re-establish Croatia's reputation from Yugoslav days as a location for film making. "Thanks to 'Game of Thrones,' many people are coming to visit the very old walls in Dubrovnik and Split," Croatia's deputy tourism minister, Ratomir Ivicic told CNBC. "Season five will be made in Sibenik -- also a very beautiful place in Croatia." "Game of Thrones" grew its audience 24 percent last season, delivering viewer tallies on a par with the final episodes of hit series "The Sopranos." Filmed in different spots across Europe, "Game of Thrones" has inspired interest in places like Dubrovnik, an ancient Croat port city and UNESCO World Heritage Site used to represent King's Landing. Special "Game of Thrones" tours are now available in both Dubrovnik and Split for those want to relive the show. 'Winds of War' Several internationally renowned television programs and movies were shot in Croatia during the Yugoslav era. These included television miniseries "Winds of war" and "The pope must die," a comedy film starring Robbie Coltrane that was filmed just before the Croat Independence War erupted in 1991. While some film makers headed to the Yugoslav capital of Belgrade, most chose Croatia, the Republic's filming hub. The city of Zagreb appealed because its typically central European appearance meant it could pass for Vienna -- a more expensive place to shoot -- or Prague, which was cheap but trapped behind the Iron Curtain. Zagreb's large film studio remains to this day, but the carnage of the 1990s brought the industry to near-collapse. While some non-war-related filming continued in Zagreb, which was away from the frontline, most camera crews visited only to capture the violence. Croatia's film sector has yet to fully recover 20 years on, but has the chance to use the success of "Game of Thrones" to attract directors back. Local business leader Ivica Mudrinic was sanguine about Croatia's prospects of building on the attention.
