Best Trucking Stocks To Invest In 2015

DELAFIELD, Wis. (Stockpickr) -- There isn't a day that goes by on Wall Street when certain stocks trading for $10 a share or less don't experience massive spikes higher. Traders savvy enough to follow the low-priced names and trade them with discipline and sound risk management are banking ridiculous coin on a regular basis.

>>5 Big Trades for Post-Taper Gains

Just take a look at some of the hot movers in the under-$10 complex from Thursday, including Alimera Sciences (ALIM), which is skyrocketing higher by over 60%; pSivida (PSDV), which is soaring higher by over 40%; Oxygen Biotherapeutics (OXBT), which is ripping higher by over 30%; and Astrotech (ASTC), which is spiking higher by over 20%. You don't even have to catch the entire move in lower-priced stocks such as these to make outsized returns when trading.

One low-priced stock that recently exploded higher was trucking player YRC Worldwide (YRCW), which I highlighted in Dec. 12's "5 Stocks Under $10 Set to Soar" at $9.70 per share. I mentioned in that piece that shares of YRC Worldwide had been downtrending badly for the last five months, with shares plunging lower from $33.89 to $7.06 a share. Shares of YRCW had recently formed a triple bottom chart pattern over the last month, at $7.06, $7.20 and $7.44 a share. The stock had started to reverse its downtrend and enter a new uptrend since forming that triple bottom, with shares moving higher from $7.06 to $10.50 a share. That move was starting to push shares of YRCW within range of triggering a big breakout trade above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $10.63 to its 50-day moving average of $10.87 a share.

Hot Oil Service Companies To Watch For 2015: Exelixis Inc.(EXEL)

The company also engages in various clinical programs for cabozantinib focused on the treatment of metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, renal cell carcinoma, non-small cell lung cancer, hepatocellular cancer, and melanoma. In addition, Exelixis, Inc. involves in developing a portfolio of other novel compounds to address serious unmet medical needs through collaborations with various pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, including Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, sanofi-aventis, Genentech, Inc., Boehringer Ingelheim Gm bH, and GlaxoSmithKline and Daiichi Sankyo Company Limited. Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Roberto Pedone]

Another under-$10 biotechnology player that's starting to trend within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade is Exelixis (EXEL), which develops small molecule therapies for the treatment of cancer in the U.S. This stock has been crushed by the bears so far in 2014, with shares down sharply by 41%.

If you look at the chart for Exelixis, you'll notice that EXEL has been trending sideways and consolidating for the last two months and change, with shares moving between $3.02 on the downside and $3.84 on the upside. Shares of EXEL are starting to spike higher today right off its 50-day moving average of $3.42 a share. That spike is quickly pushing shares of EXEL within range of triggering a near-term breakout trade above some key overhead resistance levels.

Market players should now look for long-biased trades in EXEL if it manages to break out above some near-term overhead resistance levels at $3.55 to $3.63 a share and then once it clears more resistance at $3.84 a share with high volume. Look for a sustained move or close above those levels with volume that hits near or above its three-month average action of 4.85 million shares. If that breakout kicks off soon, then EXEL will set up to re-test or possibly take out its next major overhead resistance level at its March gap-down-day high of $4.50 a share. Any high-volume move above $4.50 will then give EXEL a chance to re-fill some of its previous gap-down-day zone that started at $6.66 a share.

Traders can look to buy EXEL off weakness to anticipate that breakout and simply use a stop that sits right below some key near-term support levels at $3.18 to $3.02 a share. One can also buy EXEL off strength once it starts to move above those breakout levels with volume and then simply use a stop that sits a comfortable percentage from your entry point.

    D. E. Shaw reduced its stake in lots of companies, including Acadia Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: ACAD  ) and Exelixis (NASDAQ: EXEL  ) . Acadia has skyrocketed over the past year, rising more than 10-fold, on high hopes for its pimavanserin drug, which treats psychosis in patients with Parkinson's disease. If the drug gains FDA approval, it will enjoy little competition and could be a big winner for Acadia. The company thinks the drug might be effective against psychosis related to Alzheimer's disease as well and is conducting trials for that, too. Acadia is also raising about $100 million via a secondary stock offering to fund ongoing and future trials.

When you have a run-of-the-mill headache or cold, you take an aspirin or an antihistamine which you most likely picked up off a shelf at your pharmacy. You don see a doctor, you don have to talk to the pharmacist and you definitely don need a prescription for an over-the-counter (OTC) medication, some of which you might even take on a daily basis.

According to a paper from the American College of Preventative Medicine released in 2011, more than $17 billion of OTC products were sold in 2010 and more than a third of American adults reported using OTC medication on a regular basis. A survey conducted in 1999 showed that nearly 20 percent of the population used an OTC pain medication in any given week.

While there is the risk that readily available medications may be misused, OTC products are commonly used because they allow fast and direct access to effective medication for a whole host of common ailments. They also have the added benefit of helping to reduce the pressure on our health care system by preventing needless doctor calls.

When you think of OTC medications many of the first to come to mind, such as Tylenol, Sudafed and Benadryl, are products made by Johnson & Johnson (NYSE: JNJ). But over the past decade especially since the turmoil of the Great Recession there has been a rise in eneric generics, otherwise known as store brands.

Most OTC medications have been around for decades, in the case of aspirin more than a century, and as a result have virtually no patent protections. That means that competition in the space has always been fierce and most manufacturers invest heavily in building up brand reputation for effectiveness, making it a relatively low margin business to begin with.

The market has become even more competitive since retailers have realized that they can keep more money in their own pockets by contracting for the production of virtually identical products which can be sold un

Advisors' Opinion:
  • [By Dan Caplinger]

You can find many examples of this phenomenon recently:

Late last month, Pitney Bowes (NYSE: PBI  ) cut its dividend in half after announcing worse-than-expected sales and income. The stock had suffered from weakness in Pitney Bowes' core mailing and enterprise business solutions segments, and the company chose to sacrifice its former double-digit yield in order to shore up its financial condition. Even after the cut, the stock still yields a fairly high 5%. In February, CenturyLink (NYSE: CTL  ) cut its dividend by about 25%, again after reporting weak guidance for its earnings for the remainder of 2013. Even though the rural telecom company chose simply to put cash previously earmarked to pay its former yield of 7% toward share buybacks instead, the stock plunged more than 20% in response to the move, although it has rebounded significantly since then as investors recognized the fundamental benefits to the company from the capital reallocation. Until three months ago, Cliffs Natural Resources (NYSE: CLF  ) had a high dividend yield approaching 7% despite terrible conditions in its iron-ore and metallurgical-coal businesses. After announcing earnings in mid-February, the company cut its dividend by more than three-quarters in a move that will conserve cash for the ailing producer of raw materials for steel production. Now, the stock yields just 2.6%.

That's not to say that all of the highest dividend paying stocks are doomed to reduce their payouts. Businesses that are designed to focus on maximizing cash flow rather than seeking growth can often sustain very high yields for years. Vanguard High Dividend Yield (NYSEMKT: VYM  ) and other dividend ETFs use a combination of factors beyond simple yield to choose stocks with sustainable high payouts.
