With the very obvious consumer trend toward smaller tablets,Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT ) has little choice but to release a smaller version of its Surface if it has any hopes of success.Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL ) recently launched its iPad Mini in an admission that there is a market for smaller devices. Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG ) Nexus 7 has a hot seller among Android enthusiasts, and Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN ) was easily the first company to see major success with its 7-inch Kindle Fire. Windows Blue, which may be officially dubbed Windows 8.1, will lay the groundwork for smaller Windows tablets.
In the video below, Fool contributor Evan Niu, CFA, lays it out for investors.
It's been a frustrating path for Microsoft investors, who've watched the company fail to capitalize on the incredible growth in mobile over the past decade. However, with the release of its own tablet, along with the widely anticipated Windows 8 operating system, the company is looking to make a splash in this booming market. In this brand-new premium report on Microsoft, our analyst explains that while the opportunity is huge, the challenges are many. For example of moves by another industry player, several weeks ago, Verizon (NYSE: VZ ) announced big plans of its own. It will invest $100 million in solar panels and fuel cells provided by SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR ) and ClearEdge Power, respectively. These will represent up to 70 million kilowatt hours of electricity, the equivalent of the power needed for 6,000 homes per year. Verizon also said it will cut its carbon emissions footprint by 50% by 2020. Its increasing initiatives are expected to significantly reduce fuel and energy costs, as well as green up its operations.

Schadenfreude's in season
Not everyone's opposed to the law, necessarily. For example, Xcel Energy (NYSE: XEL ) is already working to expand its portfolio of wind-generated power in the state, and two years ago, it put into operation a 19-megawatt solar farm in cooperation with SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR ) . As a so-called "investor-owned utility," Xcel is already subject to a target of 30% renewables use by 2020 -- so a law making its rural rivals hit a 20% target probably didn't upset Xcel all that much. - [By Ryan Lowery]
Going green
Over the past few years, the phrase "green energy" has also been added to our vocabularies. Solar energy has been at the forefront of the green energy push, but many have wondered if it's merely a bubble. While that's possible, a recent report by GTM Research and the Solar Energy Industries Association shows a large increase in the installation of solar panels in the U.S. The positive news seems to be good for solar product manufactures like SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR ) , who's seen a whopping 670% rise in its share price over the last year. While a few analysts rate SunPower's stock as an underperform, the vast majority rate it as a hold or a strong buy. Even with a gross margin of less than 10%, SunPower managed to end its fiscal year with net operating cash flow of $28.9 million. While that's not a huge number, the prior year's net operating cash flow was in the red by $125 million. - [By Bruce Kennedy]
Tbe solar farms, containing more than 50,000 solar panels on 100 acres, were reportedly built by SunPower (NASDAQ: SPWR) and took about a year to build.
