Citigroup (NYSE: C ) was one of the biggest losers during the past two days of the market's pullback -- at least when it comes to banks. But this morning, after opening 0.4% lower than yesterday's close, the bank's share price shot up into positive territory. It currently sits at a very modest 0.04% gain just before 10:30 a.m. EDT. Following the crowd is certainly helping Citigroup this morning, as the distraction leads investors away from some negative headlines.
Back in court
Much like Bank of America (NYSE: BAC ) , Citi is revisiting old business that it thought was resolved. Back in court to fight allegations from a private equity firm, Terra Firma, Citi is facing an $8.3 billion price tag if it loses this second round. Similar in size to B of A's costs if it wins the second round of its settlement fight with investors, Citi's loss would be a big hit to the bank's recovery, not to mention its bottom line.
Headed down?
Analysts at Zacks recently downgraded Citigroup from Outperform to Neutral. Though the bank has a number of cost-savings initiatives, the analysts believe the 1% growth of operating costs over the past year are enough to hold the bank back from outperforming the market. Pressures from legal issues (see above) and low interest rates are other factors that the analysts considered when downgrading the bank.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Jonathan Yates]
Even though the stock market rallied on Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke's remarks with the Dow Jones Industrial Average (NYSE: DIA) and Standard & Poor's 500 Index (NYSE: SPY) surging, the long term winners will be stocks in the staffing industry such as Paychex(NASDAQ: PAYX), TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI), Robert Half (NYSE: RHI), and Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC).
- [By Jonathan Yates]
When looking at small cap stocks, it is useful to compare the company with others that have expanded in both share price and size. For those considering investing in the $100 billion staffing industry, the growth of TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI) shows what could be the potential path for Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC), as both operate in the $29 billion demand labor sector. Other firms have done well in the staffing industry include Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX) and ManPower Group (NYSE: MAN).
- [By idahansen]
The entire demand labor industry should do well as the US Department of Labor just reported that 169,000 more jobs were added to the American economy. The more work there is, the more demand there is for the services of staffing solutions firms such as Labor SMART, Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX), TrueBlue (NYSE: TBI), and Robert Half International (NYSE: RHI).

For those looking to invest in real estate stocks, highly recommended is the Dr. Housing Bubble blog. In a recent posting, the "Dr." pointed out that there was a "Lost Generation" when it came to household income. That has not happened for those investing in staffing industry stocks such as Paychex (NASDAQ: PAYX), Robert Half International (NYSE: RHI), TrueBlue, Inc. (NYSE: TBI), and Labor SMART (OTCBB: LTNC).

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Brian Stoffel]
But I'm not here to talk about these two companies
I offer those two up as examples that this trend of profiting while helping medical companies save money, is very real. The company I'd like to introduce you to today is much smaller: Medidata Solutions (NASDAQ: MDSO ) . - [By Kevin Marder]
Among the names, Medidata Solutions (MDSO) is a developer of clinical development software for use in the research of new medical treatments. Most Wall Street analysts forecast earnings growth of 38% in 2013 and 13% in 2014. Revenue growth over the past several quarters has been very steady, at 21%, 24%, 26%, 27% and 27%, respectively.
- [By Jonas Elmerraji]
Mid-cap medical software stock Medidata Solutions (MDSO) is the smallest name on today's list by far, but it's hard to ignore the technical trade that's been setting up in shares. Even though MDSO has already rallied more than 52% since the start of 2013, this name looks well positioned for some serious continuation in the New Year.
That's because Medidata is currently forming an ascending triangle pattern, a bullish price setup that's formed by overhead resistance at $62.50 and uptrending support to the downside. Basically, as shares bounce in between those two technical price levels, they're getting squeezed closer and closer to a breakout above resistance. When that move through $62.50 happens, we've got our buy signal.
MDSO is another name that's been showing off outsized relative strength lately. Considering the fact that the S&P look likely to show us a healthy correction sooner rather than later, positive relative strength trends are the single most important technical indicator traders can ask for right now. When the buy signal comes, I'd recommend putting a stop on the other side of the 50-day moving average.
Berkshire Hathaway (BRK.A)Berkshire Hathaway, on the other hand, hasn't been seeing much in the way of relative strength in the last few months. Since the start of July, Berkshire's shares have only managed to gain a third of what the broad market has returned. But a breakout in shares of Warren Buffett's favorite stock means that fortunes are likely about to turn for shareholders.
Berkshire had been forming symmetrical triangle, a pattern that's formed by converging trendlines squeezing in on the stock's price at a nearly even rate. The symmetrical triangle has less upside bias than the ascending triangle we just looked at, but the trading trigger is essentially the same -- a breakout outside of the pattern is the signal to make a move. So, shares of Berkshire are flashing "buy" now.

Advisors' Opinion:- [By Ben Levisohn]
When Goldman Sachs talks, people listen. So it’s odd to see Goldman upgrade Consol Energy (CNX) and for the coal miner to fall today. Even odder: Three coal stocks that were on the receiving end of price target cuts–Alpha Natural Resources (ANR), Arch Coal (ACI) and Walter Energy (WLT)–have gained. At least Peabody Energy (BTU), which Goldman cut, is falling.

CONSOLEnergy Inc. (NYSE: CNX) is one of the ultimate contrarian plays at Merrill Lynch. The company is the only coal stock in their universe to be rated as a stock to buy for investors. Advisors' Opinion:- [By Sean Williams]
For-profit education company Apollo Group (NASDAQ: APOL ) also advanced 4.9% without any primary news. The thought process for investors here -- other than piling into a company that tends to be more volatile than the S&P 500 on a very big up day -- is that an improving economy should encourage people who've previously given up on finding employment to attempt to retrain themselves through online education. I, on the other hand, still think much of the sector will continue to see declining enrollments and fewer subsidies from the U.S. government, which makes Apollo an extremely risky bet.

Next, it will be important to monitor the relative performance of oil's most commonly correlated assets: Gold, the S&P 500, and the US Dollar. It might be easy to assume that any positive moves in oil will carry over into the rest of the commodities space, as well. Higher oil prices have led to projections that alternative commodities ETFs like the SPDR Gold Trust ETF (GLD) andiShares Silver Trust ETF (SLV) will be able to gain traction and move to new highs for the year. But the fact that this has not been the case suggests that the broader global framework is still not conducive to significant bull moves in commodities as a whole. The SPDR S&P 500 Trust ETF (SPY) is still trading at its own record highs but activity in the PowerShares DB US Dollar Index Bullish ETF (UUP) has much better potential to move prices in oil.
