Second-quarter earnings have been fairly strong across the market, but that's largely due to cost-cutting and margin expansion, not revenue growth. That's why the company's cautionary words have helped drive the Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJINDICES: ^DJI  ) and S&P 500 (SNPINDEX: ^GSPC  ) down 0.26% and 0.39%, respectively, today. �

Caterpillar's revenue fell 16% in the second quarter to $14.62 billion, and its profit dropped 43% to $960 million, or $1.45 per share. Both figures were below estimates, and they show just how much demand for mining companies and other construction companies has dropped this year. A big factor is economic growth, and Caterpillar warned that it foresees global growth of no more than 2% this year, as well as continuing headwinds in Europe, where management thinks the eurozone just finished a seventh consecutive quarter of negative growth.�

    Stanley Black & Decker reported fourth quarter revenues of $2.9 billion, up 9% from last year’s Q4 revenue of $2.7 billion. Net earnings for the quarter came in at $38.5 million, up from last year’s Q4 net income of $36.1 million. SWK’s EPS for the quarter was reported at 41 cents, but after excluding one-time charges, diluted EPS for Q4 came in $1.32 The company was able to beat analysts’ estimates of $1.30 EPS on revenues of $2.87 billion. CEMEX, S.A.B. de C.V. (CEMEX), incorporated on January 20, 1931, is a global cement manufacturer with operations in North America, Europe, South America, Central America, the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East and Asia. The Company is a holding company engaged through the operating subsidiaries in the production, distribution, marketing and sale of cement, ready-mix concrete, aggregates and clinker. During the year ended December 31, 2009, the Mexican operations represented approximately 21% of the Company�� net sales. CEMEX Mexico is a direct subsidiary of CEMEX and is both a holding company for some of the operating companies in Mexico and an operating company involved in the manufacturing and ma! rketing of cement, plaster, gypsum, groundstone and other construction materials and cement by-products in Mexico.
