AEP relies on coal for about 66% of its generating capacity, comparable to TECO Energy's (NYSE: TE  ) 61% coal capacity. TECO takes its coal cravings a step further with vertical integration, pulling 9 million tons of solid black gold annually from its Appalachian mines.

    Dog days for natural gas
A new report from the Energy Information Administration predicts a relative drop in natural gas use for electricity generation over the next year. As natural gas prices push higher, the EIA expects natural gas' share of the generation pie to drop 2.4 percentage points to 28% for 2013. To fill the gap, the EIA expects coal to make a 7.8% comeback this year. Although many utilities with older energy portfolios are celebrating the news, coal-centric TECO Energy (NYSE: TE  ) arguably has the most to gain from natural gas' price increase. Not only does the company's regulated division rely heavily on coal for 61% of its generation, but the utility also owns and operates Appalachian coal mines.

    Raising rates
Dominion (NYSE: D  ) requested a fuel rate increase for its Virginia operations, citing higher fuel costs and increased demand as primary reasons for its ask. Its first request in two years, a fuel rate increase is meant to cover costs, but not increase profits. The total ask reflects a 2.1% increase in the average customer's monthly bill, considerably less than TECO Energy's (NYSE: TE  ) 10% ask in April. According to Dominion and TECO, both their requests keep their customers' bills below national averages. If Virginia's regulatory body approves the request, Dominion's new rates will rise in July.

Yesterday, Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX  ) announced that starting next week, it will provide calorie counts on all of its menu boards in its U.S. stores. The move follows earlier menu updates by McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) and others, as companies try to get out in front of any new legislation. Since 2010, when health care legislation came into effect, the FDA has been working on a law requiring businesses to display calorie information. That effort seems to have stalled out due to strong lobbying and sharp differences between the sides in the debate.

Grimace may be one of the endearing McDonaldland characters, but too many grimacing employees at McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) may also be the undoing of the world's largest restaurant operator.

Starbucks has done a good job of fending off challenges to its core coffee business in recent years. Fast-food giant McDonald's (NYSE: MCD  ) has had great success with its McCafe line of premium beverages, but a recent rise in customer service complaints had Fool contributor Rick Munarriz speculating that dealing with longer preparation times for premium drinks might be behind the surge in unfriendly employees and longer drive-thru waiting times. By contrast, the customer experience at Starbucks is one of its primary attractions, and customers don't hesitate to stand in long lines waiting to make their purchases.
